Kakuma is the second urban centre in Turkana to get municipality status, after Lodwar. By mid-2024, the municipality office was fully operational, and a team backed by UN-Habitat had started mapping public land to guide placement of streetlights, public toilets, access roads and water points. The development approach is meant to serve refugees and host communities together, in line with the Refugees Act of 2021 and the county’s Shirika/Ushirika integration plan.
